Few Asian Martial Art Forms Unknown To the Western World

Most of the Asian countries are very rich for their culture and historical background. All around the year, most of the Asian countries receive a massive number of visitors and travellers. Different cultures and lifestyles attract the tourists more and there is no chance of disappointment in terms of variety. Martial art is the most common factor among them.


All most all the Asian countries have a particular style of martial art which is completely different from the other in terms of technique and origin.  China, Japan, India, Indonesia, all these countries are very famous. Those who are interested in martial art travel to these countries from around the globe. Many courses are also offered for a short period of time which helps to understand the art form better. Here are few of those martial art forms which are treasures of these countries.

Popular Asian Martial Art Forms

Indian kalarippayattu and Thang- Ta:

Kalarippayattu is a popular art form of Kerala. It is an ancient art and has originated much before the Chinese martial art. It is a mixture of kicks, self-defence, weapons and wrestling. The unique part is that it also teaches to heal and kind of physical illness.

Thang-Ta is also an Indian martial art from the state of Manipur. This is a mixed martial art form inspired by many Chinese techniques, combined with Indian weapons. It is also a deadly style as it was used earlier for fighting.

Japan- Chanbara:

It is not a very ancient art form. Japan has both ancient and modern style of fighting. This style was invented in around the 70’s in Japan. It is mostly based on sword-fighting and is used to train samurais. It has a mixed component of “Goshindo” martial art. Nowadays it is practiced by many Asian martial art experts and they recommend it for stress release. Muay Thai camps in Thailand also encourage distinctive martial art forms.

Indonesia- Silat:

This is more popular as a sport in Indonesia. It has a mixed component of the weapon, striking and takes down techniques. It is quite an ancient art form and thus has many disciplines to fight.  It is very new for the western countries but recently in a tournament in 2010, there were participant from around 32 countries. Before it was only held in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. 

Philippines- Dumog:

Philippines have a variety of martial art forms like Kali, Eskrima, Arnis, etc. this is the newest among all and has a wide mix of fighting techniques. Weapons and wrestling are the most key factor. This art form is very dangerous, as it can cause some serious damage to small joints in the body if used wrongly.

Vietnam- Vovinam:

It is a traditional art6 form which has evolved around the 20th century. This style is based on hard and soft techniques of fight and defence. It is quite similar with other Asian martial art forms.

In Asia, martial art does not only teach how to fight and self-defence but also teaches to respect the opponent. Muay Thai camps in Thailand encourage learning different fighting arts of Asia.
